The Turkey and Thanksgiving: A Story About Induction
If you ask me, what would I compare myself to? I would answer, 'a turkey with analytical and deductive abilities.' Allow me to share a story with you.
Once upon a time, there was a carefree turkey living on a farm. The farmer would bring food for the turkey every morning as the sun rose. Remember, this was a turkey with analytical and deductive abilities. It observed the sunrise and the arrival of food each day, pondering the connection between the two. For 99 consecutive days, it woke up early and reached the same conclusion: whenever the sun rises, food arrives. Excitedly, it proclaimed this finding to its fellow turkeys and made a prediction for the 100th day. However, at dawn on the next day, the food didn't come, and sadly, it was killed by the farmer because it was Thanksgiving.
This story is based on a tale from 'The Problems of Philosophy' by the British philosopher, Bertrand Russell.
