How large was the Union army

The Union army reached its peak size in 1865, with approximately 1 million soldiers. However, the size of the army fluctuated throughout the course of the Civil War, with the number of soldiers ranging from around 200,000 at the start of the war to over 600,000 by the end of 1862.
