Does Personality Really Stay the Same? New Study Challenges Long-Held Belief
Abstract: This article discusses the common belief that a person's personality is stable and presents new evidence challenging this notion. A comprehensive study published in the Journal of Psychology and Aging tracked a group of Scottish volunteers for 63 years, making it the longest study of its kind to date. The study found no correlation between participants' personality test scores at age 14 and the same tests at age 77. The study examined six areas of personality, including self-confidence, perseverance, stability of moods, conscientiousness, originality, and desire to learn. The researchers also discovered that earlier studies produced different results, suggesting that personality changes are more likely to occur over long periods of time. While not perfect, these findings hold significant implications for personal life, work, and interpersonal relationships.
Keywords: personality stability, personality tests, self-confidence, perseverance, stability of moods, conscientiousness, originality, desire to learn, intelligence, general well-being.
