This resulted in significant yield loss from extreme heat stress, accounting for one-third of the overall yield trends during the maize growing season. Our research suggests that the CMB will continue to experience yield declines in the future. These findings highlight the crucial role of short-term heat stress during flowering in controlling yields under climate change and emphasize the need for multi-scale and multi-method crop model assessments to enhance our understanding of crop physiological responses to climate change.
