Potential maize yield (Yp) is defined as the yield of well-adapted maize cultivars grown in an irrigated system with non-limiting water and nutrient availability, and effective control of biotic stress. This yield varies across different countries (Fig. 1), in accordance with the standards set by the Nature Communications journal.
