Metabolism Example: How Our Body Breaks Down Carbohydrates for Energy

One example of metabolism is the process by which our body breaks down carbohydrates to produce energy. When we consume carbohydrates, they are broken down into simpler sugars, such as glucose, through a series of chemical reactions. This process, known as glycolysis, occurs in the cytoplasm of cells. The glucose molecules are then further broken down in the mitochondria through a process called cellular respiration. This process produces adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the primary energy source for our cells. The byproducts of cellular respiration include carbon dioxide and water, which are eliminated from the body through respiration and excretion, respectively. Overall, metabolism refers to the biochemical processes that occur in living organisms to sustain life and provide energy for various physiological functions.
