Road traffic accidents in China have been on the rise in recent years, with 244,937 accidents occurring in 2018 alone. These accidents resulted in 63,194 deaths, 258,532 injuries, and economic losses of RMB 1.38 billion (National Bureau of Statistics of China, 2019). Among these accidents, those that occur in urban areas are particularly concerning. Despite urban road mileage making up only 7.5% of the total road mileage in China, urban road traffic accidents (URTAS) account for 45.8% of all road traffic accidents in the country. Additionally, casualties resulting from URTAS account for 38.8% of all national casualties. This paper aims to explore the factors contributing to URTAS and to propose potential solutions to reduce these incidents in urban areas of China.
