Can platform economy development promote regional innovation? - A multidimensional exploration based on the evaluation system of regional innovation capability

Abstract: With the continuous development and application of digital technology, platform economy has gradually become a new engine for economic development, playing an important role in various aspects of economic and social life. This study focuses on the impact of platform economy development on regional innovation capability, using panel data from 31 provinces and cities in China from 2013 to 2020 to construct an indicator system to measure the level of platform economy development. Spatial econometric models are used to analyze the impact of platform economy development on regional innovation capability, and further explore the multidimensional heterogeneous effects focusing on the five core dimensions of regional innovation capability evaluation system (knowledge creation, knowledge acquisition, enterprise innovation, innovation environment, and innovation performance), in order to grasp its underlying mechanisms. The study finds that regional innovation capability has certain spatial spillover effects. The impact of platform economy development on regional innovation capability has spatial transmission effects, but this spatial effect may have different promotion or inhibition effects due to regional spatial differences. Regional knowledge creation, knowledge acquisition, enterprise innovation, innovation environment, and innovation performance all increase with the improvement of platform economy development level, but the spatial transmission effects of each dimension are not the same, which may to some extent inhibit regional innovation. This study can provide policy implications for enhancing regional innovation capability, achieving coordinated regional economic development, and promoting high-quality economic transformation.
