My fascination with mechanics, sparked by Sci-Fi movies like Transformers and RoboCop during my childhood, ignited my interest in Mechanical Engineering. This passion led me to explore the intricacies of mechanical models, developing a hands-on understanding of transmission principles through disassembly and reassembly. In high school, my participation in a wooden bridge load-bearing competition deepened my appreciation for physical mechanics, exploring complexities of load distribution and structural integrity. This experience solidified my desire to pursue a career in Mechanical Engineering.
My enrollment at the School of Mechanical Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology, a leading institution known for its excellence, further nurtured my academic development. As a diligent and accomplished scholar, I excelled in my studies while actively participating in extracurricular activities. My leadership role in the baseball club involved organizing events and fostering a sense of camaraderie among my peers. I also excelled in the Hundred Regiments Recruitment Campaign, demonstrating strong organizational skills. My academic achievements earned me acceptance into the University Talent Class and the Freshman Scholarship, a testament to my dedication and commitment.
Throughout my academic journey, I built a strong foundation in Mechanical Engineering through courses such as Mechanical Design, Control Engineering, and Dynamics of Mechanical Vibration. I further enhanced my skills by acquiring proficiency in various engineering software, including CAD, SolidWorks, Rhino, Fusion 360, Edgecam, Maxwell, MATLAB, ROS, and Java. My determination to become a proficient mechanical engineer is fueled by extensive internship experiences and a growing passion for the machinery research industry. Through the Manufacturing Engineering Cognitive Practice Program, I gained hands-on experience with engineering techniques, including lathe operation, milling, wire EDM, and the use of fusion-jet 3D printers and light-curing printers. My internship project at SHENZHEN MULTIFIELD PRECISION CO., LTD., involved designing and assembling a prototype device for electromagnetic repulsion control. I conducted experimental tests, processed simulation data, and obtained a function curve showcasing the impact of fitted variables on the magnitude of repulsion. My outstanding contribution and performance earned me the title of “Outstanding Intern”. As a laboratory tester, I engaged in various aspects of the problem-solving process, including problem identification, workpiece solution design, feasibility evaluation, assembly, debugging, analysis, and optimization. This experience enhanced my practical abilities and fostered a scientific mindset.
In the first half of 2023, I designed and 3D printed soft robot gripper jaws with specific stiffness, performing finite element simulations and successfully implementing gripping operations. Subsequently, I interned with Wenjun Lu's research program, focusing on the study of titanium-tungsten alloys for cardiovascular stents. My work involved element ratio design, mechanical property exploration, and crystal structure analysis. I gained proficiency in operating various instruments, including grinding and polishing machines, cutting machines, fused silica vacuum tube sealers, and hardness measuring instruments. This experience provided valuable insights into the impact of material properties on product performance. Additionally, I interned at the Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory, designing and installing high-precision and complex motors. These experiences have equipped me with the comprehensive skills necessary to excel in my master's program.
Mechanical engineering is a rapidly evolving field that encompasses the application of scientific knowledge and engineering principles to various aspects of mechanical systems. With advancements in technology, areas such as advanced materials, energy, and biomedical engineering have gained significant importance. The Master of Science in Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (MSc(Eng)(ME)) program at the University of Hong Kong is specifically designed to provide postgraduate students with a comprehensive perspective and in-depth understanding of current challenges in this dynamic field.
