Abstract

Language contact is an essential concept in sociolinguistics that examines the influence of different languages on one another. This thesis explores the localization of English in China through language contact. The purpose of this study is to understand how English has been localized in China, the factors that have contributed to the localization process and the impact of language contact on the Chinese language. The research methodology employed in this study is a qualitative approach, which includes a review of existing literature, analysis of language data, and interviews with Chinese speakers. The results indicate that the localization of English in China has been influenced by several factors, including the Chinese language and culture, the education system, the media, and globalization. Language contact has also impacted the Chinese language, leading to the emergence of Chinglish, a hybrid language that combines elements of Chinese and English. The implications of the localization of English in China are significant, including the development of a distinct Chinese English and the potential for increased communication and collaboration between China and the English-speaking world.
