The Detrimental Effects of Unpaid Work for Young People: An Economic and Social Perspective

A group of individuals advocates for the necessity of young people engaging in unpaid work, such as volunteering. However, from my perspective, the disadvantages of this practice unquestionably outweigh the advantages.

In terms of economic factors, the participation of young individuals in unpaid work can give rise to several problems in the labor market. Specifically, it can have a negative impact on average salaries. As an increasing number of free laborers infiltrate various companies and organizations, entrepreneurs may opt to replace regular employees with them solely for financial reasons, leading to a decrease in average earnings. Consequently, those individuals who are unwilling to accept lower wages may face the risk of unemployment.

When the unemployment rate surges, society as a whole may become ensnared in turmoil. On one hand, dissatisfied employees may express their grievances towards management or labor unions due to unfair treatment, potentially resulting in widespread strikes that impede societal development. On the other hand, such circumstances can also drive the general population to extreme measures, even leading to conflicts against authority and attempts to establish a new government.

Moreover, it is unfair to urge young people to participate in unpaid work. Every individual deserves to be remunerated for their labor. While it is true that exploitation cannot be entirely eradicated from society, it is unreasonable to encourage a form of modern-day slavery. When young workers graduate from school, they assume responsibilities towards their families, significant others, and so forth. Rather than dedicating their time to unpaid tasks, they can gain valuable experience from regular work or further studies.

While the suggestions offered by elders may hold some merit, it is crucial to thoroughly analyze the issue, as changing circumstances can significantly impact the relevance of their past experiences.

Overall, it is unnecessary for young adults to heed this advice and engage in unpaid work, as such practices can contribute to inequity. Every individual's labor deserves fair compensation, allowing for the achievement of true balance in society.
