17-Year-Old Stands Up To Dad, Prioritizes Personal Growth & Works 3 Days a Week
I'm a 17-year-old male who recently decided I wanted to work 3 days a week instead of 5 to 7. I graduated early from high school and am taking some time off before college to explore my interests and passions. Working full-time was draining me, and I realized I wasn't truly living my life. I needed a balance between work and play.
I told my boss I wanted to work 3 days a week, as long as I could be at work for the days the restock truck comes. To my surprise, he was understanding and supportive. He recognized the importance of having a social life and pursuing personal goals.
I told my dad about my decision, and he got weirdly agitated at first, saying 'Why would you do something like that?' and 'You need to work. That sounds like typical deadbeat behavior.' I didn't want to get into it because I was tired.
Later, he randomly started saying, 'I don't understand how you could do something like this,' and essentially yelled at me about how I'll never get anywhere in life if I do things like this. After five minutes of not making sense, I snapped back at him, telling him my work life is none of his concern. I couldn't believe the audacity of his reaction and how he was trying to control my decisions.
But you know what? I stood my ground. I am 17 years old, and I have the right to make choices about my own life. Working 3 days a week doesn't mean I won't be successful. In fact, it means I'll have more time to focus on my personal growth and development.
It's frustrating when parents think they know what's best for you without even considering your perspective. I love my dad, but this time, I had to stand up for myself.
I believe that success is not just about working tirelessly. It's about finding a balance, pursuing your passions, and living a fulfilling life. And that's exactly what I'm planning to do. So, to all the naysayers out there, watch me thrive and prove you wrong. I'm taking control of my own destiny.
