As a doctoral advisor, I have reviewed a section of a master's thesis and made some revisions to improve its clarity and flow. The section discusses the wide range of applications for steel as a fundamental material in various fields, the importance of steel production to the national economy, and the defects that can occur during the processing of steel. The revised section is as follows:
Steel is a vital material used extensively in daily life, including in the construction, automotive, and aerospace industries. Moreover, steel production is a significant indicator of a country's economic level and comprehensive national strength. China has maintained its position as the world's top steel producer for 26 consecutive years since 1996. However, according to statistics from early 2023, the production of pig iron, crude steel, and steel products in China declined by 0.8%, 2.1%, and 0.8%, respectively, compared to the same period in the previous year due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors [1].
During the processing of steel, various factors, such as processing environment, can cause surface defects, including oxidation, discoloration, cracking, pitting, impurities, and scratches. These defects not only affect the steel's appearance but also indicate potential damage that could compromise the quality of the products and even pose safety risks. Additionally, China lags behind other developed countries in producing high-value-added and high-tech steel products. This is mainly due to the quality of some key materials needing improvement and the low stability of steel product quality. Therefore, it is challenging for downstream steel enterprises to judge the performance of steel accurately, and processing techniques are likely to deviate, hindering the large-scale development of high-end steel products in China. Moreover, some national and industry standards in China are lower than those of foreign countries to accommodate companies with low technical levels and outdated equipment. Therefore, detecting surface defects in steel is a necessary step to improve steel production quality, enhance the quality of finished steel products, ensure construction safety, and lay a foundation for industry development by identifying potential problems in the production process.
