Drought stress is one of the most serious natural disasters in agricultural production in China, closely related to water, and has long threatened the food production security in the country. Wheat, as a typical high-water-consuming crop, is very sensitive to drought stress in its growth and yield formation, especially in the winter wheat area in northern China, where drought stress events occur frequently, posing a huge risk to the increase in winter wheat production in the country. Therefore, it is urgently necessary to clarify the spatiotemporal evolution pattern of drought stress on winter wheat and its impact on yield. Irrigation, as the main measure to alleviate wheat drought, can effectively reduce yield losses caused by drought. However, with the rapid development of the economy and the continuous increase in population, the contradiction between the supply and demand of irrigation water resources in China has become increasingly prominent, which greatly limits agricultural production. Therefore, it is urgent to achieve optimal allocation of irrigation water resources. Based on historical meteorological data, winter wheat phenology and yield data in the main winter wheat producing areas of China, this study systematically analyzed the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of drought stress and its impact on yield. By coupling multiple model ensembles with multi-objective optimization algorithms, an irrigation system optimization model for the main winter wheat producing areas was constructed at the regional scale, which determined the high-yield and water-saving irrigation systems in different typical years in the main winter wheat producing areas. The research results have important significance for quantifying the impact of drought stress on winter wheat production, formulating rational irrigation plans, and ensuring national food security.
