Consumer attitudes towards genetically modified (GM) foods vary across different countries. In Sweden, a majority of consumers have moral and ethical doubts about eating GM foods and do not perceive attributes like better taste or lower price as beneficial enough to persuade them to purchase GM foods. However, tangible benefits, like being better for the environment or healthier, seemed to increase willingness to purchase GM foods. In Norway, self-reported risk perceptions towards GM foods and preferences for domestically produced foods affected willingness to accept (WTA) for GM foods, with a greater discount required. Respondents with high levels of concern about food safety had a lower WTA for GM foods. In China, gatekeepers in the food distribution channel believe that Chinese consumers currently have ambiguous views of GM food products but are likely to accept them provided there are consumer benefits, a price advantage, and credible governmental information concerning safety of GM foods. The Chinese government's policy is to take advantage of a window of opportunity provided by markets such as Japan and Europe, which presently prefer to import non-GM foods, while developing the full potential to grow GM crops just as soon as external market conditions change.
