In 2013, some scholars began to combine functionalist translation theory with the study of film subtitles. Huang Qiao used the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon as an example to analyze the translation strategies under functionalist theory. The author chose this film because it won an Oscar award and was a Chinese film that was recognized internationally, with the subtitles playing an important role. Moreover, the film contained many cultural elements, which posed challenges to the translation process.
