This article showcases an innovative approach to research in the oil and gas upstream industry. Previous studies often treated the United States as a homogenous entity, failing to conduct in-depth analysis of the major shale oil producing regions within the country. This approach resulted in research outcomes that did not fully reflect the actual situation of oil supply in the United States, making it difficult to accurately assess the potential for further oil production. In this article, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the leading shale oil producing regions within the United States, comparing oil and gas production before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. We found that, with the exception of the Permian Basin, the recovery of oil production in the other major shale oil producing regions has been less than ideal. The significant impact of oil field depletion on new oil supply post-pandemic has weakened the efficiency of capital expenditure in the upstream industry. Our analysis of the status of the major shale oil producing regions in the United States is critical in facilitating a more accurate assessment of future oil supply in the country.
