Four Life Lessons from an MRI
Five years ago, a routine MRI revealed that I had an acoustic neuroma, a benign brain tumor. While thankfully slow-growing, this diagnosis has taught me valuable lessons that I want to share with you today.
Lesson 1: Choose Your Words Carefully
My doctor could have told me I had a potentially fatal brain tumor. Instead, he described it as 'a benign growth.' The news was still difficult, but his gentle framing made a world of difference.
As you engage in discussions at Princeton, remember that how we say things matters. Approach sensitive topics with respect and compassion, even when disagreeing.
Lesson 2: Embrace Science and Institutions
Coping with my neuroma requires immense trust in science and institutions – from the MRI technology to the doctors' expertise. This experience has reinforced the importance of scientific literacy and strong civic institutions.
Let's work together to ensure everyone has access to and trust in these vital pillars of society.
Lesson 3: Remember Everyone Faces Challenges
Before this speech, only a few people knew about my neuroma. We all have hidden struggles, and it's crucial to remember we're not alone.
Support each other and approach everyone with empathy, knowing they might be fighting battles you can't see.
Lesson 4: Practice Humility
My diagnosis is a constant reminder of life's fragility and the role luck plays in our successes. It has taught me humility and a deeper appreciation for human resilience.
Despite our flaws, we can achieve incredible things. Let's support each other, celebrate our shared humanity, and strive for greatness together.
Welcome to Princeton! I'm thrilled you're here.
